Fashioned from plate aluminium, spiky tabs are bent over to secure the joints of a typical panel desk. The claws protruding from the furniture are kind of a graphic representation of the angst of college and studying, the desperation of trying to come to terms with your creative voice versus institutional and economic pressure. The bamboo desktop has an Ikea coded, green washed passivity in contrast to the forged raw metal structure. Oval foot holes for resting one’s feet and integrated paper shredder for destroying ideas.

In the Weeds

We enjoy mixing making processes into singular objects, it encapsulates a contradictions in production methods and material in the wider consumer landscape. In this piece we used scraps from our carved aluminium series and welded them before shaping and gluing infill sections from European walnut. A round-about way to weld wood together, but also implying that one can buy this standard material somewhere, wood stuffed inside aluminium box section for some reason after all you can buy aluminium printed with wood grain why not the other way around?

Infilled

Screws are a super normal and universal method for building, but it is embarrassing for designer to leave them exposed. Possibly from a nostalgia for traditional timber joinery or the desire for the visual purity, screws are usually filled, plugged, hidden or covered. Even the cheapest furniture, where every possible cost has been trimmed, we still equate their appearance as a negative value. 

 is an overcompensation for this delusion, a marriage between an over looked economical construction system and the cultural mythical value of natural freshwater pearls.
